This is also a good reason to run the unit at least once a month for an hour or more to lubricate the seals (among other things). I feel this is another good reason for synthetic trasmission fluid, which runs about 20 degrees cooler than Dino and consequently causes a drop in engine temp as well. I do know that running constantly hot will cause lower end seals to harden and eventually leak. Since ours is an early '94 the previous owner must have taken care of this little problem - hope he changed the seal at the same time. I have the same Vectra/Spartan setup and at 80,000 mi have not had a problem - seal, or overheating but ours does have the lower radiator hose cooler (looks like a small muffler) and it has always run about 185 degrees on a hot day (98 degrees - hot for us). so if I were you check the back of the engine for leaks.other the rear main bearing seal. The new cummins engines are now design to run a million miles. Years ago it was common for rear main bearing seals to leak Ford was a great one for rear main bearing seal leaking. You didn't say how many miles you got on the engine ! If you got least than 200,000 miles on it I doubt if your problem is rear main bearing seal. Then I am going boating and I am going to leave it at the Havasu house and drive the toad back to Big Bear. I am going to open a beer and try to put it out of my mind. We both had 94 5.9's on a Vectra (Spartan chassis).Good Luck.RKL Cost was around $900 as they had to drop the Allison to get at the seal.Oil came out the same place. We both had the seal replaced with new improved seals (part of them is leather I am told). Same thing happened to mine at 65,000 and to my buddy's at 72,000. Cummins engines have some great warranties so check it out. Check your warranty and then get the oil leak fixed before something else takes place. You never said anything about the mileage on your Cummins. Any thoughts? What type is seal is used between the engine and Allison Trans, rope, one piece, rubber?ġ995 63,000 miles not under warranty, engine oil came out of bottom hole on what I would call tne bell housing on the Allison, I can put my finger in the hole and it gets oil soaked.Ģ004 Alfa See Ya Gold 40' 400 ISL, Hummer H3 Toad,Ram 1500 4X4 Quad Cab Toad, 24' Hallmark Cargo Trailer, 20' Carson Toy Hauler when we need the extra room.
I am hoping my oil is dirty and needs to be changed.
I went from high elevation cold to 100 plus in Havasu. I lost 2 quarts of oil out the rear main on my Cummins 5.9 B on a 300-mile drive. RV.Net Open Roads Forum: Rear main leak on Cummins 5.9 B Open Roads Forum
